Everyone is welcome to sign up for these shifts and trainings, but if you email stephen@urbanriv.org to let him know you'd like to join the Garden Group, you'll get an email each time a new shift is added and get access to the Garden Group discussion page on Slack
The most acute need for our plant nerds right now is assisting with the large volunteer groups that come to the Wild Mile often. In the past, some of those groups have gotten confused and pulled swathes of plants that were supposed to be on the gardens. Please consider signing up to assist one of those groups here. You don't have to be an expert yet, just willing to learn a little
Every Thursday Evening - Wild Mile Gardening Before the Workshops
Throughout the summer there are a variety of workshops Thursday evenings at 6:00 PM on the Wild Mile, and most are at least botany adjacent. Since some of the volunteers most interested in gardening will be there, we'll take the opportunity to do some gardening before the workshops start. It's mostly weeding and plugging seedlings into the gaps we create while weeding, but sometimes other gardening tasks come up, like experimenting with new garden designs.
July 10th - Nick Dorian, Pollinator Gardens
July 17th - Dave Odd, Foraging Workshop
July 24th - Foraging with Axel Peterman
Aug. 7th - Soil Workshop with Nance
Aug. 14th - Brown People Foundation Plant Walk
Aug. 21st - Bat Night
Aug. 28th - Macroinvertebrates with Ellie Wasilewski
Sept. 4th - Axel Peterman Foraging Walk (This shift may be delayed because there'll be a large volunteer group right before. If you'd like to assist with that group, please sign up here!)
Whenever You'd Like - Weeding
If you've been to at least one session of weeding and feel comfortable out on the islands, you can simply pick a time that works for you and do some additional weeding on your own. All you need to do is let Stephen know with a day or two heads-up (either via Slack or email (stephen@urbanriv.org)), check in with us as you are heading out, always wear a life vest, and be careful out there. We'll try to post the times you pick on Slack, or even turn them into additional gardening shifts on here, in case people want to join you.
