Odd Job Shifts: Bringing the last mussels to Bubbly Creek

Expired

Description

Specific odd job shifts will be listed here. Volunteers registered for Odd Jobs will get emails alerting them to shifts, but any volunteer can register for them.

Monday October 20th 1:00 to 5PM - This winter Urban Rivers collected 5 pregnant native freshwater mussels from streams up north and brought them to DuPage County's Urban Stream Research Center. This Monday Phil is bringing the last 1,500 or so of their offspring over to Bubbly Creek so we can put them in sand-filled tubs (we call them mussel bunkers) suspended under the floating gardens. Here's what it looked like when we did this at the Wild Mile a few weeks back

This task is really in two parts. You could do one or both of these.

1:00 PM - Meet at the Wild Mile dock and help load mussel bunkers and other supplies into the pontoon boat. After loading up, you'd be welcome to come along on the boat when we leave about 1:45 to head Bubbly Creek. We could continue doing some prep work on the bunkers on the way.

2:45 PM - Meet here at the dock at Park 571. We can pick up the baby mussels from Phil and any volunteers meeting us at Bubbly Creek. Then we'll shuttle everything and everyone over to the floating wetland where the mussel bunkers will be installed.

If placing the bunkers goes smoothly, we should only need 45 minutes or so to do it. If you are getting a ride on the boat back to the Wild Mile, we should get back around 5PM.
