Trainings

Many of our volunteer opportunities involve additional training to create the most safe and educational volunteer experiences possible. Below is information and links for all trainings.

 

• US Coast Guard Training

This kayak safety training is REQUIRED for any River Ranger wishing to kayak. It includes a lot of important information on best paddle practices, environmental and water traffic hazards, safety equipment usage, etc.

 

• BURP Training

Bugs in Urban Rivers Project (BURP) is our ongoing research study on the macroinvertebrates of the Chicago River. Learn to help analyze and photograph samples collected using a microscope! NOTE: No new trainings available during the field season -- please check back later.

 

• Bird Monitoring

This brief training introduces the why, when, and how of bird monitoring with Urban Rivers. Plus some cool birding resources!

 

All other volunteer opportunities, such as garden maintenance, do not required advanced trainings. You will be trained for the day's tasks when you arrive.
