Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where do I go to begin my shift?

A: Regardless if you are kayaking, gardening, or signed up for anything else, all shifts start inside our Urban Rivers office where you can sign in and say hi to staff!

Q: What is the office address and door code?

A: Our office is located at 1440 N Kingsbury St., Suites 005 & 006 in the basement. There is a directory box on the wall where you can call the Urban Rivers office to automatically be buzzed in. No more code to remember!

Q: What should I wear/bring?

A: Dress in clothes that are comfortable and that you don’t mind getting dirty. Breathable fabrics such as dry-fit or cotton are recommended. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring sunscreen, a hat, or other protective wear if desired. All safety equipment will be provided.

Q: When are kayak safety trainings?

A: All kayak safety training dates are listed on our Upcoming US Coast Guard Training Sessions page

Q: Can I kayak alone?

A: We require volunteers kayaking to have at least one other volunteer out with you at all times, unless otherwise approved by UR staff. The buddy system ensures greater safety in case of an emergency.

Q: How do I know when others are kayaking?

A: You can see on a shift opportunity description how many other people have signed up for the shift. You can also be the first to sign up and can encourage your friends to join. If no one else shows, one of our staff will join you or approve you to paddle solo.

Q: How old do you have to be to volunteer?

A: To kayak, you must be at least 18 years old to volunteer. For all other volunteer opportunities, minors can participate with a parent, guardian, or teacher present.

Q: I’m interested in having my company/organization/group/etc volunteer. Is that possible?

A: We love having groups out to volunteer! To request a group volunteer workday, email team@urbanriv.org with a description of your group, group size, and possible dates you are interested in.

Q: Who do I talk to if I have other questions?

A: You can email rangers@urbanriv.org at any time and ask any question. You are also welcome to stop inside the Urban Rivers office and speak to any available staff member. We are typically in office Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm, though these hours often vary.
